Working…
This tool takes the sound out of a video and gives you the same video, silent. It is the quick answer to the everyday problems: a clip with background noise you do not want to share, a screen recording where someone talks in the room, a loop for a website or a presentation where autoplay with sound would be annoying, or footage you want to put your own music over.
Most online tools make this slow. They upload your video to a server, re-encode it, and give back a file that looks a little worse. Here the video stays on your device and, for MP4 and MOV, it is not re-encoded at all. Only the audio is left out.
Drop a file on the panel, choose it from your computer or phone, or open one from Your Library. MP4, MOV and M4V are handled instantly; WebM, MKV and AVI are supported too.
The tool finds the audio tracks inside the file and leaves them out. You can follow the progress, and for typical files this takes a few seconds.
Play the silent result right on the page, then download it or save it to Your Library. The new file is named after the original with “-no-audio” added.
A video file is a container with separate streams inside: one for the picture, one or more for the sound. Removing audio does not require touching the picture stream. For MP4, M4V and MOV, the tool builds a new file that contains the original video data, byte for byte, and a fresh index that no longer mentions the audio. That is why it is fast, why a long recording does not take minutes, and why the result looks identical to the source.
The tool also works with big files. The video is read in pieces and never loaded into memory as a whole, so a multi-gigabyte recording from a camera or a phone is not a problem for MP4 and MOV.
If you compare file sizes, the new file is usually only a few percent smaller. That is normal: audio is a small part of a video, and the picture takes most of the space.
Need the sound instead of removing it? Use Extract Audio from Video to save the soundtrack, MP4 to MP3 for a quick MP3, or the Video Converter to change the format.
No. For MP4, M4V and MOV files the picture is not touched at all: the tool copies the video data exactly as it is and only leaves the sound track out. There is no re-encoding, so there is no quality loss and the result is ready in seconds, even for large files. Only in rare cases, when a WebM, MKV or AVI file cannot be copied as-is, the video has to be re-encoded, and the tool tells you when that happened.
MP4, M4V and MOV (including videos recorded on iPhone, Android phones, GoPro and screen recorders) are handled directly. WebM, MKV and AVI are handled by a built-in video engine that loads on first use.
Not for MP4, M4V and MOV: the video is never loaded into memory as a whole, so even multi-gigabyte recordings work. WebM, MKV and AVI go through the video engine, which keeps the file in memory, so they are limited to about 700 MB.
No. The file is read and rewritten inside your browser tab, and the new video is built on your device. Nothing is sent to Sound Booster servers, so private recordings stay private.
Because sound is a small part of a video. A typical audio track is around 128 to 256 kbps, while the picture often uses several megabits per second, so audio is usually only a few percent of the file. If you need a much smaller file, you want compression, not audio removal.
All of them are removed. Dual-language videos, commentary tracks and separate microphone tracks are dropped together, and the result is a completely silent video.
Not yet. This tool removes the whole audio track. To work with the sound separately, use the Audio Trimmer, or extract the audio first and edit it with the other audio tools.
No. Some screen recordings and exports are already silent, for example when the microphone was off. In that case there is nothing to remove and your original file is already what you need.
It will play wherever the original played, because the video keeps the same codec and settings. The new file also stores its index at the beginning, which helps it start quickly on the web.
Yes for MP4 and MOV, which includes videos from iPhone and Android. These files use plain browser features and do not need the heavier video engine.
